If erratic behaviour was a season, it’d be spring — one moment it’s sunny, the next is absolutely chucking it down. That means our choice of kicks need to be able to keep us fresh and dry while remaining fit-worthy, which isn’t as easy as it sounds. So, we called in some help.
In this edition of SNEAKER ROTATION, artist and sneakerhead Dani Buck helps us ID the best sneakers for the season, and shares a few other thoughts and feelings on the topic of kicks. Because why not.
What’s the number one essential for a spring sneaker?
Versatility. Spring weather is unpredictable. You need a sneaker that can handle it all. A lightweight yet durable pair that works with different outfits is key for me. And while neutrals are great, a pop of colour keeps things fresh and fun.
What materials do you need to look out for to be sure a sneaker is waterproof?
Look for materials like Gore-Tex, it’s a go-to for waterproof protection while staying breathable. A tightly knitted mesh is also a solid choice, as it helps repel light rain and dirt without sacrificing comfort. Additionally, treated leather or synthetic uppers with water-resistant coatings can add an extra layer of defence. And don’t forget a sealed or gusseted tongue to keep water from sneaking in.
Biggest sneaker ick?
When people don’t take care of their kicks! Seeing someone crush the heel by not unlacing their shoes when putting them on hurts my soul. The same goes for wearing sneakers that are super dirty with no effort to clean them — show your shoes some love! Sneakers aren’t just accessories; they’re part of the fit, and keeping them fresh makes all the difference.

How are we keeping our white sneakers minty in spring?
The key is to wear them with caution — avoid muddy spots, unexpected puddles, and crowded areas where they might get stepped on. But since accidents happen, the most important step is to clean them as soon as you get home. Use a sneaker protector spray to help repel dirt and stains before they even happen.
Can you give us any spring styling hacks?
Match a pop of colour in your sneakers to a small detail in your outfit, like a graphic tee, accessories, or even socks — it ties everything together without trying too hard.
If you were a sneaker, which would you be and why?
I think I am an Air Force 1 Low in white. That would also be the shoe I’d wear for the rest of my life if I had to only pick one.
What was the last sneaker you bought yourself?
The Nike Air Max “Muse” in the black and silver colourway. A very sexy pair.

What are your personal fave models for an all-day, all-weather sneaker?
The all-black Salomon XT-6 with Gore-Tex. They’re comfortable enough for long days on my feet and rugged enough to handle anything from city streets to trails. They’re a no-brainer for me.
If you had to wear one brand for the rest of the year, what would it be?
Probably ASICS. The GEL-KAYANO 14 is one of my all-time favourites — comfortable, stylish, and built to last. Plus, they’ve been dropping some great colourways and collabs lately, so I’d never get bored.
Finally, your hot sneaker tip for the rest of the year?
Keep it simple. It’s all about clean, timeless silhouettes that go with everything.
