Quite simply — a really good fit. The perfect pair is an important staple of any contemporary wardrobe. With the right fit, it’s a lifetime investment that you’ll be able to rely on every summer.

What’s a must-have element in a pair of shorts?

For summer, a good breathable fabrication. I usually go for natural fibres such as linen or cotton, which encourage good air circulation for those hotter days.

What’s the optimal length for a pair of shorts?

There are a lot of people who say an inseam length of 1 inch above the knee is the best, but I don’t agree. Length is completely personal to how you want your shorts to fit, and what looks best on your body.

What’s your favourite brand for shorts?

I love the Margiela oversized tailored shorts.

As a stylist, what are some tips for building a look around the shorts?

Work out what kind of look you would like to go for, then focus on the length of the inseam. Adding a chunky ankle sock is a cute, easy look to wear with trainers or loafers. For day to day, I like to choose looser fitting shorts with a wider leg opening, then something tight on top like a tank or cardigan. When choosing the shoe, go for something that is unusual for the short’s style to make it interesting. For example, sports shorts with a flowery mule, basketball shorts with ballet flats, jorts with cut out boots…

What shorts trends have we seen most recently in menswear and womenswear?

We’re seeing a lot of extremes — either tiny and micro or baggy and oversized for both men and women. For mens specifically, I think dressing down tailored shorts has been a big trend. With womens, I think we have finally moved away from the cycling short into a more loose shape.

The elephant in the room: jorts. Any comments or strong opinions here? What works, what doesn’t?

I love jorts, both for mens and womenswear. I like to wear them with boots, trainers, ballet flats, or a fun heeled mule. They’re a super versatile staple for your wardrobe.

Shorts as occasionwear — what’s a good fabric to choose?

For summer, a thick cotton, or something with structure that’s still comfortable and breathable in the heat. Avoid anything too flimsy or see through.
