In September 1990, the Berlin Marathon ran through both the East and West of the city for the first time. Thousands of runners and spectators gathered to celebrate in what has, in the 35 years since, become not just one of the world’s biggest running events, but a lasting symbol of unity and connection through sport.

To put all this gear to the test before race day, we united three Berlin-based runners who are all part of different running collectives in the city: Funwi Shuakonwi Elvis, the founder of Elmes Running Club, Benedikte Klüver of Run Pack, and Hyoungjeon Jo of AYOP (At Your Own Pace). We also took a minute to pick their brains about the best marathon training routines and running in Berlin, in case you were thinking of giving it a go, too!

Have you done the Berlin marathon before?

This will be my first Berlin Marathon, after the half in April, and I’m filled with excitement. Berlin has a special place in my heart, and running through its streets with thousands of people will be both a personal milestone and a celebration of community.

Can you talk us through your marathon training schedule?

I train 4-5 days a week, balancing long runs with tempo sessions, strength work, and active recovery. As race day gets closer, I’m increasing mileage but also focusing more on mental preparation and nutrition.

You pass historic landmarks, creative districts, parks, and rivers all in one run.

Tell us about your running club…

The Elmes Running Club was created to blend running with cultural storytelling. We run together, share heritage stories, and wear fashion pieces that express identity.

What do you love about running in Berlin?

The diversity — you pass historic landmarks, creative districts, parks, and rivers all in one run. The people in running crews are also amazing and creative, this gives a sense of community since we create spaces for ideas sharing which goes beyond running.

What did you think of the adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4?

I was impressed. I felt really good in them and was able to perform at a high speed with ease. The softness of the sole reduced muscular strain and fatigue, which made a big difference during the run.

Have you taken part in the Berlin marathon before?

Yes, I took part in September 2024. I was incredibly proud of myself and my body. I cried with relief and pride when I crossed the finish line. All that hard training for months got me there, injury free. I even picked up the pace by the end.

Can you talk us through your marathon training schedule?

I kept my training to one strength session per week and three runs: One 10k with my running collective Run Pack, one interval or tempo on the track, and a long run on the weekend. My longest run before the [previous marathon] was about 35 km, two weeks before the race. After that, I tapered down and only ran gently to keep the muscles active but fresh.

What were your thoughts after trying the adidas Pro 4 running shoe?

Any tips for people thinking about training for their first marathon?

Don’t overdo it! I see many friends fall sick right before their big race because they have pushed themselves too hard and left the body fatigued instead of strong. Rest more and eat more. Respect the body’s needs and taper down in good time.

Have you done the Berlin marathon before?

This will be my first time. From the moment I got the email confirming my spot, I started training almost every day. I often imagine crossing the finish line and placing the medal around my neck. Just that thought makes me both nervous and thrilled.

What makes you go faster?

My job can be really tough, and there are many moments when it takes a toll on me mentally. But when I run, all that stress disappears. And during speed workouts, when it feels like my heart is about to explode, I actually feel stronger — like I’m becoming a tougher version of myself.

Tell us about your running crew.

Ayop is all about running together for joy rather than just chasing times. I joined because of Sujin, who leads the crew. The way she cares for this community is inspiring. She puts in so much effort to keep it alive, and that made me want to be part of it too.

Go at your own pace, set your own goals, and enjoy the process. In the end, you’ll be the one smiling.

How important is a good running fit?

A good running fit has a huge impact on my mentality. If the fit is off, it can ruin not just the race but the whole day. For me, the right fit has to be light and aerodynamic, and definitely not too big.

Any tips for people thinking about training for their first marathon?

Keep it fun. If you start comparing yourself with others and push too hard, you’ll end up giving up on running altogether. Go at your own pace, set your own goals, and enjoy the process. In the end, you’ll be the one smiling.

Would you wear this shoe for a marathon or on long distance runs?

I have already purchased the neon colour adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4 for the Berlin Marathon. Without a doubt, I will be wearing this shoe.
