Salewa was founded in Munich in 1938 by Josef Liebhart. The brand started off by making ski poles out of hazel wood, which were in such massive demand in the harsh winters of 1952 and 1953 that the company managed to tap into the highly competitive outdoor sports market. 1955 saw the Salewa brand add mountain equipment to its expanding outdoor collection, as the company began to sponsor expeditions. This led in turn to the team at Salewa re-designing and revolutionising important equipment such as the crampon, making it into the lightweight version that is so loved today! The turning point came in 1978 when Salewa decided to widen their product range to include functional clothing for mountaineers and keen sportsmen and women. The brand have not looked back since and their logo, an eagle, is still printed on all of the Salewa apparel and footwear, and remains a mark of high quality!
