Hamilton Carhartt founded this company back in 1889, making workwear most excellent in quality. A man who truly believed in his craft, Hamilton Carhartt once said "I believe that when a man wears an article that I manufacture, his self-respect is increased because he knows that it is made by an honest manufacturer, who is honest with his employees." Starting out with only five employees and a philosophy of visiting and speaking directly with the workers who wore his garments, Carhartt slowly built his business producing high quality, hard-wearing clothing for railway workers. By the late 1920s, he had established himself firmly within the workwear industry. Many industries - including the railways, which carried cargo from the mills, were completely devastated during the Great Depression. Hard times call for creative measures, so instead of scaling back operations, Carhartt and his son began the "Back to the Land" campaign and opened several new plants and a headquarters in Irvine, breathing new life into a ruined economy. The brand's headquarters remain, to this day, in Irvine. These humble beginnings were not forgotten and working with the motto "From the mill to millions", Carhartt continued to grow. Today, this company remains family owned and is renowned throughout the world for producing the best quality work clothing possible for the active worker.
