The company, which was founded in 1949 by Kihachiro Onitsuka, started out as a small business producing baseball shoes in Kobe, Japan. Asics is an acroynm of the Latin phrase "Anima Sana in Corpore Sano" – “A healthy body means a healthy mind,” a phrase that also provides the brand with their guiding principle. Onitsuka's vision was to offer young people a new perspective on life and to help them to be more self-confident by encouraging participation in sports.
